The Dakota was built from about
1880 through 1884 so it wasn't actually complete in time
to really be set in Jack Finney's book setting of 1882,
but that is an artistic license that was taken due to
the author's fascination with the building, which is
wholeheartedly understandable.
You can learn a lot about the
Dakota building online, so I don't really need to
re-invent the wheel here. I did particularly like
this old photo of it though, which you can
purchase prints of in various sizes from
