Degree Day Regions 1-5 with 1 being the coolest at less than 2500 degree days and region 5 being warmest with over 4500 degree days. A degree day is any day that warms to 50 F, so 20 days at 70 and 30 days at 80 would be 20(70-50)+30(80-50)=1300 degree days. Wine grapes like between 1700 and 4000 degree days, with the lower end being more for white and the higher end being more for reds. The term "Reserve" doesn't appear to legally mean anything. Varietal is a wine based on the variety of grape used to make the wine. Côte means slope. Cru means vineyard. Icewine is the same thing as Eiswein (crushing frozen grapes for a highly concentrated and sweet wine), not only do they sound the same when you say them out loud, they're both über expensive too. You can often count on a blended wine to be faithful and meet your not-overly-brave expectations, but personally I am not totally happy with the current trend of blending nearly everything to death until the regional classic tastes are nothing but a faded memory. Plus how adventurous is it to always rely on a blending trick to get a passable wine? It's really more fun to get into some different varietals and learn which ones you really like and maybe then consider some blends of things you're actually familiar with? I don't know but I think there's a moral to this story somewhere in there. Trivia - Grapes were traditionally crushed with bare feet to avoid crushing the bitter seeds. |
